August is like the Sunday of summer, so why not get the most of out this month? There’s still so much fun to be had, even as summer winds down to a slow and humid crawl.
Here are some ideas to have a great and wallet-friendly summer right here in North Brooklyn:
- Host an epic stoop sale.
- Check out a free flick in McCarren, Transmitter, or McGolrick.
- Register people to vote.
- Imbibe in a 2-for-1 happy hour at 21 Greenpoint (and don’t forget their infamous nachos are off menu, but you can get them during happy hour).
- See a free House of Vans show before the venue is gone forever (August 24th’s Interpol show is the last one!)
- Take advantage of the smoked fish deals at Acme (30 Gem Street)—but try not to splurge too much cash—on Friday.
- Discreetly sip your bevy of choice in the park. Pro tip: Add cheese, She Wolf bread from McCarren Farmers Market, and Ovenly cookies.
- Help out an elderly neighbor with errands. Everyone needs water, ice cream, and a smile.
- Create a meal only with ingredients from the farmers market. Bonus: turn this activity into a family style potluck with your nearest and dearest.
- Volunteer at the Greenpoint Church’s soup kitchen, or with North Brooklyn Angels.
- Throw out all of that crap taking up space in your closet, and sell your clothes to Beacon’s (74 Guernsey Street).
- Volunteer with rescue dogs and cats.
- Walk around Greenpoint as if you’ve never been here before; play tour guide for a friend who lives in a different ‘hood.
- Get end-of-day deals on cookies and pastries at Ovenly (31 Greenpoint Ave), or at other spots around the neighborhood through this app that just launched in the neighborhood.
